Applying for a UK Passport in Australia

Posted on | January 13, 2009 |

I am lucky to have a father who is Scottish, which means I can apply for a UK passport and I won’t need to worry about visa restrictions. I recently applied for my UK passport, although I am waiting to recieve it.

It is really easy to apply for one (assuming you have all the right documentation). Depending on what country you are in will depend on what website will best serve you. For us Australians in Australia the website to go to for UK visa or passport related queries is http://ukinaustralia.fco.gov.uk/en/. The passport section of the website http://ukinaustralia.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/ tells you every thing you need to know to get your UK passport.

If you are an Aussie over the age of 16 and applying for your first passport you need to fill out the C1 form. This is the form I needed. It will ask you details about yourself and family and takes about 15 minutes to fill out.

Apart from the C1 form I also need the following:

  • Two Identical passport photos
  • My Birth certificate
  • My dads’ UK Passport
  • Parents Marriage Certificate
  • Photocopy of my Passport
  • Passport fee sheet + fee (I gave credit card details)

I needed to send all original documents (except my Aussie passport which was just a photocopy) plus a photocopy of each.

For a first time applicant it is best to go to this page and select your category http://ukinaustralia.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/how-apply/categories-first-time-applicants/. Whether your Father was born in the UK or your eligable through your mother etc can all be selected from this link and they will then tell you exactly what you need.

It takes about 6 weeks to get the passport (So they say I don’t have mine yet).
